Understanding Podcast Talk In “The Catch-Up Club”: A Conversational Analysis

This research examines the phenomenon of turn-taking mechanisms and feedback in the podcast featuring Agatha Pricilla, Ify Alyssa, and Sivia Azizah. The study aims to identify turn taking pattern, feedback and analyze the strategies used by the host in managing sequential organization and transition relevance place (TRP) during complex conversational exchanges in podcast using Sacks, Schegloff, and Jefferson’s (1974) theory of turn-taking. The descriptive qualitative method was employed to investigate selected podcast episode. The results of the study show that overlaps and interruptions are generally cooperative rather than competitive, both serve build good relationship and strengthen shared understanding, rather than to dominate the conversation, while feedback show both verbal and nonverbal that consistently supports the primary speaker without taking over the turn. Sequential organization is maintained through adjacency pairs and insertion sequences that preserve coherence despite brief topic deviations, and Transition Relevance Places (TRP) exhibit two distinct patterns first precisely predictable TRPs that result in seamless latching, and second early-projected TRP that result in brief overlaps at the end of utterances.
