Abstract
This study entitled “The Use of Figurative Languages in Billie Eilish’s Song Wildflower” aims to identify the types of figurative language found in Billie Eilish’s song Wildflower. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The data were taken from the lyrics of Billie Eilish’s song Wildflower, which is included in her album Hit Me Hard and Soft. The data were collected by reading and examining the lyrics carefully and identifying expressions that fulfilled the characteristics of figurative language based on the theoretical framework used in this study. The analysis focused on identifying and classifying the figurative expressions according to their types. Based on the analysis, two types of figurative language were identified in the analyzed data, namely simile and personification. The simile was found in the expression “like a fever,” which explicitly compares the speaker’s emotional experience to a fever through the comparative word like. Meanwhile, personification was found in the expression “time breaks your heart,” in which the abstract concept of time is presented as an active agent capable of causing emotional pain. The findings show that figurative language is used to express emotional experiences in a more vivid and imaginative way. Through comparison and the attribution of human-like action to an abstract concept, the lyrics communicate emotional experiences that may be difficult to express through literal language. Therefore, this study concludes that simile and personification are the types of figurative language identified in the analyzed data from Billie Eilish’s song Wildflower.
