EXPLORING STUDENT PERCEPTIONS OF GROUP DISCUSSION IN IMPROVING ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILLS

This study explored students’ perceptions of group discussion in improving English speaking skills among students of the English Education Department at UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh. A descriptive qualitative design was employed, with data collected through semi-structured interviews with twelve participants selected using purposive sampling and analyzed thematically. The findings showed that eight participants had positive perceptions, as group discussions provided opportunities to practice speaking, interact with peers, receive feedback, and learn in a supportive environment. Two participants had negative perceptions due to limited speaking opportunities, limited vocabulary, pressure to respond quickly, and discomfort, while two others had mixed perceptions, acknowledging the benefits of speaking practice but perceiving slow improvement. The effectiveness of group discussion was influenced by vocabulary, preparation, understanding of the topic, and equal participation. To overcome challenges, participants prepared before discussions, used simple English, and sought help from peers. Overall, group discussion was perceived as useful for improving English speaking skills, although its effectiveness varied among students. The findings suggest that lecturers should create supportive and interactive discussions that provide sufficient opportunities for students to participate actively in English.
